Birds see a reflection of their habitat — trees, bushes, water, sky — in windows and reflective building exteriors. From a bird's perspective, glass is completely invisible. They fly directly into it believing they're flying toward open space.
The growth of dense urban areas along ancient migration routes poses a significant and often fatal threat. Ornithologists now identify collisions with human-built structures as the leading cause of migratory bird mortality in North America, second only to habitat loss.
Birds also collide with clear glass on greenhouses, solariums, bus shelters, and corner windows — seeing through to the trees or bushes on the other side and striking the glass in an attempt to reach them.
Why clear film doesn't work
Birds need a detectable pattern spaced no more than 2" apart. Only patterned films applied to the exterior achieve 90%+ collision reduction.
