How Long Does Window Film Installation Take?

One of the first questions homeowners and business owners ask when they're considering window film is: "How long will this take?" It's a fair question — nobody wants a multi-day project that disrupts their home or business.

The good news: professional window film installation is faster than most people expect. Here's a realistic breakdown of what to expect.

Residential Installation Times

For a typical Atlanta home, here's how installation time breaks down:

Home Size / ScopeEstimated Time
Small home, 5–8 windows2–4 hours
Medium home, 10–15 windows4–6 hours
Large home, 20+ windows6–10 hours
Whole-house (large, complex)1–2 days

Most residential jobs are completed in a single day. A typical 3-bedroom Atlanta home with standard windows usually takes 4–6 hours from start to finish.

What Affects Installation Time?

Several factors influence how long your job will take:

Window size and count — Obviously, more windows means more time. But large windows (like picture windows or floor-to-ceiling glass) take proportionally longer than small ones because the film has to be cut precisely and applied without seams.

Window accessibility — Ground-floor windows are fast. Second-story windows require ladders. Skylights, stairwell windows, and high transoms add time. This is one reason experience matters — a seasoned installer works efficiently even on difficult access situations.

Window type and condition — Standard flat glass is the fastest to film. Textured glass, leaded glass, or windows with unusual shapes require more careful cutting and fitting. Very dirty windows need cleaning before film can be applied.

Film type — Most films install at similar speeds. Decorative films with complex patterns or custom cuts take longer than standard solar control films.

Number of installers — At Sungate, we typically work as a two-person team on larger jobs, which significantly speeds up the process. One person cuts and prepares film while the other applies it.

Commercial Installation Times

Commercial jobs vary much more widely depending on the scope:

Commercial ScopeEstimated Time
Small office, 10–20 windows1 day
Medium office building, 1 floor1–2 days
Large commercial buildingMultiple days
High-rise with lift equipmentProject-dependent

For businesses, we typically schedule commercial work during off-hours, evenings, or weekends to minimize disruption to operations. We've done full office buildings overnight and had everything complete before employees arrived in the morning.

The Installation Process Step by Step

Understanding the process helps set expectations for timing:

1. Preparation (15–30 min) — We protect floors and furniture near windows, gather tools and film, and do a final assessment of the windows.

2. Window cleaning — Each window is thoroughly cleaned before film application. This is non-negotiable — any dirt or debris trapped under the film will be visible forever. This step takes time but it's essential.

3. Film cutting — Film is measured and cut to size for each window, with a small margin that gets trimmed after application.

4. Application — The window is wet with a slip solution, the film is applied, and a squeegee is used to remove water and air bubbles from the center outward.

5. Edge trimming — Excess film is trimmed precisely at the edges.

6. Final squeegee and inspection — The film is squeegeed again and inspected for any bubbles, debris, or imperfections.

7. Cleanup — We clean up our work area and do a final walkthrough with you.

The Curing Period

Here's something important to know: after installation, the film needs time to cure. During curing (typically 3–7 days, longer in cold weather), you may notice:

  • Small water bubbles or a slightly hazy appearance
  • Minor cloudiness in certain lighting conditions

This is completely normal and temporary. As the water evaporates through the film, these disappear. Do not try to squeegee or wipe the film during this period.

After curing, the film will be crystal clear and fully bonded to the glass.

When Can I Clean My Windows After Installation?

Wait at least 30 days before cleaning newly installed film. After that, clean with a soft cloth or squeegee and a mild, non-ammonia cleaner. Avoid abrasive materials that can scratch the film surface.

Can I Be Home During Installation?

Yes — most homeowners are home during installation. We work efficiently and try to minimize disruption. You don't need to do anything special except make sure windows are accessible (move furniture if needed) and keep pets away from the work area.

The Bottom Line

For most Atlanta homeowners, window film installation is a one-day project that's complete before dinner. We work efficiently, clean up after ourselves, and leave you with windows that look great and perform better immediately.
