How Do I Clean and Maintain Window Film After Installation?

One of the most common questions after installation is: "How do I take care of this?" The good news is that window film is genuinely low-maintenance. But there are a few specific things to know — especially in the first 30 days after installation — that will keep your film looking perfect for decades.

The First 30 Days: The Curing Period

Immediately after installation, the film needs time to cure. During this period, the adhesive is still bonding to the glass and any residual moisture is evaporating.

What you'll see: Small water bubbles or a slight hazy appearance in the first few days to weeks. This is completely normal. Do not try to pop the bubbles or smooth them out — they will disappear on their own as the film cures.

What to avoid during the first 30 days:

  • Do not clean the windows
  • Do not apply any pressure to the film surface
  • Do not use suction cups on the glass
  • Do not hang anything from the film

After 30 days, the film is fully cured and you can clean it normally.

Regular Cleaning: What to Use

Once cured, window film is easy to clean. Here's what works:

Recommended cleaners:

  • Plain water
  • Mild dish soap diluted in water
  • Ammonia-free window cleaners (look for "ammonia-free" on the label)

Recommended tools:

  • Soft microfiber cloth
  • Soft rubber squeegee
  • Soft paper towels (non-abrasive)

The key word throughout is soft. Window film has a scratch-resistant coating, but it's not impervious to abrasive materials.

What to Avoid

Ammonia-based cleaners. This is the most important rule. Products like Windex Original contain ammonia, which degrades the film's adhesive over time and can cause it to discolor, bubble, or peel. Always check the label — if it contains ammonia, don't use it on film.

Abrasive materials. Steel wool, scrubbing pads, rough paper towels, and abrasive sponges can scratch the film surface. Scratches are permanent and cannot be repaired — the film would need to be replaced.

Razor blades and scrapers. Never use a razor blade or scraper on window film. This will scratch and gouge the surface immediately.

Pressure washers. High-pressure water can lift the edges of the film, especially around the perimeter. Clean windows with film by hand only.

How Often to Clean

Window film doesn't require any more frequent cleaning than regular glass — clean it when it looks dirty. For most homes, that's every few weeks to once a month depending on your environment.

Homes near busy roads, construction sites, or with pets and children may need more frequent cleaning. Exterior-applied film (less common) will accumulate dirt faster than interior film.

Checking the Edges

Once or twice a year, take a close look at the edges of the film around the window frame. The film should be flush with the frame with no lifting or peeling at the corners.

If you notice any edge lifting, contact us. Small edge lifts can often be re-adhered before they become larger problems. Catching it early prevents the need for full replacement.

What About the Warranty?

Hüper Optik film installed by Sungate comes with a lifetime warranty. The warranty covers manufacturing defects, adhesive failure, bubbling, and color change under normal use.

The warranty does not cover damage from:

  • Improper cleaning (ammonia-based products, abrasive materials)
  • Physical damage (scratches, cuts, impacts)
  • Unauthorized removal or tampering

Following the cleaning guidelines above keeps your warranty intact and your film performing perfectly for the life of the installation.
